Recycling in Kihei
Introduction
Maui is a relatively small island with a modest industrial base and high transportation costs and high labor costs. Those characteristics conflict a bit with the contemporary recycling ethos - but some actions are still practical. You have options that vary based on your resort and you willingness to drop by the local recycling center.
Unlike many jurisdictions, Maui has "source sorting" - you separate the recyclable materials so that they may be placed with like material in appropriate containers. Please try to comply with this by carefully preparing and grouping the items you want to recycle.
It is crucial that everything put in a recycling bin is clean! One contaminated item turns all items in the bin into garbage. No food containers with any food residue. No liquid containers with any of the original contents remaining (rinse if not a water bottle and discard the lid). Place in a recycling bin only those items clearly meeting what the recycling bin is intended to hold.
The Pacific Shores Resort has a good recycling guide. Not all resorts have as many recycling options as Pacific Shores but this guide gives you a good idea of how to prepare recyclables.
